N’s mom made us a little night light (?) for the kitchen out of a wine bottle from one of her favorite Cabernets.  It’s not something that I would consider to be “normally” my style, but I quite like it actually.   Maybe I’m just having a real thing for twinkling lights these days.  Hmmm….not sure.

Anyways…if you’d like to make one of your own here’s what you do:

1. Save the bottle of that delcious wine you had with dinner last night.

2. Clean it out.

3. Stuff a tiny strand of Christmas lights into it.

4. Decorate it however you’d like to.  She used faux grapes & twine

5. Plug it in.

Et Voila!  You have a twinkly little wine bottle for your kitchen.  It’s a conversation starter.

Call me bored on a Saturday night, but I couldn’t resist changing the label on one of N’s spices while cleaning the kitchen.  Seeing “Dill Seed” just struck me as too hilarious.  And it will probably take him months to notice.  I look forward to that day.  Tee hee!

N and I just had his parents and little brother over for dinner this evening.  It was stressful getting prepared, but in the end it was a hit.  Along the way, we definitely had a little drama here and there.  At one point I thought to myself, “How does N’s mom do it?!  Whenever she has us over she’s completely prepared and looks fabulous!”  This was not the case with us tonight.  (Of course.) Although in the end, everything ended up okay.  However along the way there were definitely some things I took away from the evening:

  1. I need more serving plates & bowls.  We had virtually nothing to put the food in other than what it was cooked in.  Tomorrow N and I have decided to head to “It’s New to You” first thing to pick up some vintage treasures.
  2. I also need more serving spoons & such.  I mean…people can’t dip out those veggies with their fingers, can they?  I never even realized I had nothing to scoop [and dip] things with.
  3. I need a tablecloth for the dining table.  There were a couple of spills that almost gave me a heart-attack because all I could think about was….”MY DINING TABLE!!!”
  4. I also need more dinner plates.  I broke two of my antique bone china dinner plates [shown below] last night and I almost started crying.   I’m still more than a little broken-hearted about the whole thing…but I’ll just keep searching ebay non-stop until I find more.  There not easy to find though…they were discontinued in 1851.  *sigh*

And as I mentioned in the last post…my New Year’s resolution for 2009 is to have people over more often.  This was the first attempt…and I think it turned out well overall.  :-)

Happy New Year you guys!  I’ve been enjoying taking some time off from the blog these past few weeks and just having fun with friends and family.   There has been a flurry of parties, food, long drives, laughter and music.  I’m thrilled that 2008 is over.  It looks like 2009 is going to be a good year.

And with that, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to entertain more often.  So we’ve started off by inviting N’s parents over for dinner tonight.  He’s making all the food (as usual), but I offered to make dessert.  The other week I was in NYC and went to Magnolia Bakery, and noticed their assortment of delicious cakes.   Well one of them is a simple icebox cake.  And it reminded me that “hey, I know how to make that!”  It’s delicious and a snap!  Just make homemade whipped cream (heavy cream, sugar & vanilla extract)…and spread it in between layers of Nabisco chocolate wafers.  Easy.  Done!  I decorated mine with strawberries and made a little special strawberry compote on the side.  I can’t wait to eat it tonight!

First off, let me say that I realize I’ve been a slacker in the last few weeks by not posting anything.  I’ve been working on things (like my front windows!!), but not as much as usual and have actually taken a much needed break for the holidays.   I promise to try to be much better about posting in the New Year.  (I do have a lot to write about, just very little time to do it.)  At any rate, for those of you who didn’t get the paper version…here’s this year’s virtual Christmas card from me to you.  Happy Holidays everyone!!

christmas-card-2008

A Christmas visit to NYC isn’t complete without a trip to Bergdorf Goodman to see their annual holiday windows.  I go just about every year and am always inspired by the beautiful, layered compositions they create.  These photos were all taken by WallyG via flickr.

There are many more photos of the windows on flickr…and some of other years of course too.  (Just do a flickr search on Bergdorf Christmas windows.)  If you’ve never experienced them in person and get a chance to go to see them, I highly suggest it!!

I certainly have no reason to buy toys, but the Christmas season just makes you think of kids, no?  And recently I’ve been coming across tons of adorable & simple toys.  In this time of economic uncertainty, it feels like we should spend more time on simple things…and of course spend our money on items that are special and hand-made.   (At least that’s my theory, but what do I know?)  Anyways, here are some of my favorite toys that I’ve found recently.

bear1

Rutsu, a bear maker, based out of Japan is one of my favorites.  I aspire to one day own one of her bears.  Although at the moment, I’m not sure what I would personally do with it.  Therefore I have to figure that part out first.  Here’s her flickr set to see more of the breadth of what she’s created.  They are the type of stuffed bear I would love to have had as a child.

kitlanetoys

KitLane makes adorable felted sculpture dolls.  I just don’t quite know what to say about these other than, omg, so cute.  Here’s a link to her shop.

octopus1Angela Davidson is from Philly (Holla!), and ever since I found her on the Etsy geolocater several months ago I keep going back to look at her gorgeous toys in my favorites section.  This little squid is so freaking cute!!  Look at those teeth!  Here’s a link to her Etsy shop.

Decor8 posted about Sweet Nellie today which is how I saw her shop for the first time, but seriously…how cute could this little guy be?   Her shop has so many cuties that it’s hard to choose!

monster1Diane Koss (from Philly as well?) makes these adorable monsters.  I love them so much.  Fuzzy.  Imaginative.  Not scary at all.  Here’s her shop on Etsy.

woodenblocksC’mon people!  Look at these NEW blocks?!  They look like the coolest vintage blocks you’ve ever seen!  I want my future/unborn/adopted child to have blocks this awesome.  Love them.  You should see the other sides that aren’t letters.  Here’s a link to MyFathersHouse4 etsy shop.

delingosdelingos11

Los Delingos also makes adorable toys too!  I love the mixed fabric on these little stuffed animals.  Nonos is on sale now too!

Anyways…love them all.  Too cute…and I love the imagination that goes into creating these lovelies!

I’m so excited!  After haunting ebay for weeks, I finally pulled the trigger and purchased two authentic silkscreened Cuban film posters for the living room.  Yay!!  I LOVE THEM!!  I can’t wait for them to get here!!

As much as I want to hold on to all of my secret thrifting resources, I suppose I shouldn’t be stingy.  Especially considering so many people have been emailing me to ask about my sources recently.  Well, here are a few of my favorite local(ish) places to get awesome vintage finds:

  1. ReStore, 3016 E. Thompson St.  They have lots of great old hardware, bath fixtures, lighting, architectural salvage and miscellaneous other things as they come in.  That’s where I got my dining room cabinet.
  2. It’s New to You, 59th & Lancaster Ave.  I’ve purchased so many countless items here that I feel like I keep them in business myself.  (Including my dining room set.  Ssssh!)  Note: They are currently in the middle of moving to this new location, so give them a few weeks to get situated.  I went by there today and they were only 1/3 of the way moved in, and it looked like they were pretty picked over due to trying to liquidate for the move.
  3. Bargain Thrift, 5245 Germantown Ave.  Great for clothes, accessories…and there’s a place right next door (name unknown?) that has furniture.  Definitely worth checking out.   Just this week I fell in love with two drool-worthy upholstered chairs for only $125 for the pair.  Of course, there’s lots of junk too so beware.  :-)
  4. Orphelin Vintage, 720 S 5th St.  Vintage, antiques, & local art.  And it’s easy to walk to if you live in the city!
  5. Emlen Antiques, 7107 Emlen St.  It’s right down the street from the new Tiffin location in Mt Airy.  On a weekend, you’ll always see old furniture sitting out front.  His store is small…there’s no sign… but his selection is good… as well as his prices.
  6. Vintage Modern, 906 2nd St, Philadelphia.  It’s not a thrift store.  Okay okay…It’s a retail shop, but they sell mostly 60’s & 70’s furniture and the prices aren’t outrageous, so I felt obliged to include them here… because their selection is always great.  I’ve never gone in there without finding at least one piece that I had to seriously consider pulling out the checkbook for.
  7. Barn Attic, 324 Harleysville Pike, Harleysville PA.  It’s a thrift store…in a Barn!  This place is jam packed with furniture, clothes, accessories, jewelry, and knick-knacks galore.  But beware the owner has very specific rules you must follow while there.  It can be worth it though if you’re in the area!
  8. Care & Share Shoppes, 783 Route 113, Souderton, PA‎.   There are three separate parts to Care & Share.  Clothes, Home Accessories, Furniture.  In my opinion their home accessories section is the best though.  Of course, like any thrift store, it can be hit or miss.  Oh, and they don’t bargain on the price.
  9. Impact Thrift, 3 locations in suburban Philly.  I’m most familiar with their store in East Norriton.  They have a little of everything.
  10. Cedars Flea Market, Cedars PA.  It’s the 3rd Saturday of [almost] every month.  I love it.  I never go without buying at least 4 things.  Not good for furniture though…mainly focused on smalls & decorative.
  11. Adamstown, Pa.  There’s a ton of places.  Too many to name.  Just hit google maps and go.  Seriously.  I can’t believe you haven’t been there yet!  GO!
  12. Circle Thrift, 2007 Frankford Ave, Fishtown.  Great selection of clothes downstairs.  They also have a wide variety of home goods upstairs.  I’ve found quite a bit of good serving pieces there in the past.

Alright…save this list before I feel compelled to delete it out of selfishness.  :-)

NOTE: I updated the list to include Circle Thrift in Fishtown.  How could I forget them?  But also, since as Mark points out…many places on here aren’t technically thrift stores I’d call the list vintage/thrift.  In my experience it’s hard to find GOOD used furniture at cheap and/or reasonable prices…and this is what this list is trying to put out there.   Haha.  Thanks for calling me out though Mark!

First, let me say that I dislike showing photos of my house looking disheveled and ripped apart.  I realize that is part of the draw [for all of us] in reading a house blog, but it’s just that I find it somehow embarrassing as if I’m being caught picking my nose.  You know?  People gawk and stare…but not in that good way.   At any rate, in spite of not feeling as if I have anything great to show, I also feel as if real pictures (meaning warts & all photos) of my house are overdue.  So here you go.

I’ve been furiously trying to work on my guest room in time for my mother to come and visit, but the house seems to be fighting against me.  It’s as if this room just doesn’t want a nice, beautiful paint job…and to be decorated.  I present to you exhibit A.

The walls in this room are just all kinds of frustrating.  First off, they’re plaster… underneath a layer of wallpaper… underneath two layers of paint.  Sounds great, huh?   However, it’s not the painted wallpaper that bothers me, as you might think.  No, the wallpaper is actually the thin paper kind…so the fact that it’s been painted over isn’t that big of a deal.  Besides a few seams that I’m having to cut out and sand over, it’s not that bad.  It’s just that underneath this window I have a slight bit of dampness that has come in from the windowsill and it’s made the old stuff separate from the wall.  Therefore I’ve been scraping and will have to spackle it, sand it smooth….etc etc.  Oh, and did I mention that I’m also struggling to find the perfect shade to paint the walls?  Why is choosing a paint color sometimes the hardest part of the job?  For the record, I think Martha Stewart does a great job with her paint swatch program at Lowes.  (And if you’ve got lots of expendable cash to throw around, I love Farrow & Ball’s paint colors.)

Did I mention that my mom arrives this Friday?  Yeah….guess what is NOT getting done by then?  I’ll probably end up doing as much work as I can this week after work, cleaning up the mess, putting clean sheets on the bed, and calling it a day.  Not exactly how I’d like for her to spend her Thanksgiving in my guest room, but for now it’s going to have to do.  On the bright side, the first time she came to visit I had no working bathroom.

Anyways…to give you an idea of what I hope for it to look like some day in the future, here’s my inspiration images ripped from the pages of various magazines:

Wish me luck as I keep plugging ahead.
